This paper presents the characteristics of lithogenez and physico – mechanical of cohesive soil of Quaternary deposits distributed in the northern coastal plain Vietnam. The results indicate: cohesive soil of Le Chi Formation, Ha Noi Formation, Vinh Phuc Formation has been compressed. Cohesive soils of Hai Hung Formation and Thai Binh Formation were mainly uncompressed. Only cohesive soils of mQ23tb, mQ21-2hh2 were starting compression. The physico - mechanical of sediments significantly related to the level of the lithogenez, when soil is uncompressed with low bulk density, low shear strength and low compression module and vice versa
