Abstract:

The marine area surrounding Vinh Thuc Island (Quang Ninh Province, Northern East Sea) is an area with complex sea-floor morphology, with a tendency to gradually sink from North to South. While the northern part of the island, adjacent to the mainland, is mainly shallow estuarine alluvial flats, the southern part of the island is steeper and is divided by the Cua Dai area with the depth 25 m, creating a basin-shaped topography. Surface sediments in this region are used to reflect grain size and mineral characteristics and their implications for the marine sediment environment The results of grain size and mineralogy analysis show that the surface sediments of Vinh Thuc island include 14 different sediment groups: muddy sandy gravel, sand, gravelly sand, gravel mixed sand, gravelly muddy sand, gravel mix muddy sand, muddy sand, silty sand, gravel mix sandy mud, muddy, gravelly mud, sandy silt and silt. They are dominated by quartz (23.15÷98.20 %), shell fragments (0.07÷60.77 %), rock fragments (0.06÷16.80 %), little feldspar. This indicates that surface sediments can come from continent origins. The distribution of surface sediment fields is relatively complex: fine-grained sediments occupy a large area at the terrain is relatively simple and are distributed mostly in the study area, while coarse-grained sediments are distributed in a small area and scattered in some areas with strong hydrodynamic energy such as river mouths, channel mouths, and creeks (Cua Dai). This result confirms the important role of seabed topography and hydrodynamic regime in the differentiation of surface sediments.
